Puppies are now 2 weeks old today Wednesday 3/3/2003
Sandy and Kimba were mated on 15th - 19th December 2003 after a number of romantic meetings over a few months. From the beginning Sandy and Kimba got on wonderfully and it was so romantic the gentle and loving way in which Kimba courted her each time they met. |
First date

Sandy on the left and Kimba on the right
After their first meeting we decided to put in some extra effort and try and get sandy across the line for her 'Australian Championship' At this time we thought it was a long shot because we did not have much time till the planned mating. However Sandy did miraculously well in in four and a half weeks archived 71 points winning several Challenges and a couple of best in breeds and won more than the number of points required! |
The Whelping Box
We built a special Whelping box with all of the bells and whistles.. It is now proving to be invaluable as a secure home for the puppies during their early weeks.
Building the whelping box ready for Sandy's big day of delivering the puppies. |
The front is attached by a piano hinge so it can be opened allowing easy access in and out by the developing puppies. |
There is a removable divider so that a separate compartment is formed to separate the puppies from the mother while she whelps the next one. After the puppy is whelped the others are returned to the mothers compartment to feed on her nipples. |
There are 25mm dowels 125mm from the edges and the bottom to protect the puppies from being accidentally squashed between mother and the sides. |
Saturday 17th Jan 2003 -- Theoretically 30 days till Whelping

| From the first day after completion Sandy adopted the whelping box as a great place to lay down and her behavior suggests that she will be very happy to use it for her puppies. At the time of this picture Sandy has about 30 days to go before whelping the puppies. An ultra sound was performed which showed 5 puppies with the likelihood of more. |
Prior and during the pregnancy Sandy has been on a diet of Advance Puppy Growth dry food at morning and the same at night with 250g of chicken mince. Added to the evening meal has been 5mg folate tablet as there is evidence that it can reduce the incidence of Dermoid Sinus. In the last two weeks of the pregnancy Biolac supplement has been added to her diet. Sandy's weight has been deliberately increased to about 10% higher than normal plus an allowance for the probable weight of the puppies. an X-ray on 13th Feb showed that sandy was carrying 11 puppies... from what we could see they all had skeletal sizes that were similar. Looking at the X-ray we can see her entire abdomen full of puppies with the internal organs and bowel etc pushed high up into her rib cage and also pushing down hard on her bladder. THis week (one week out from whelping) Sandy seems to need to wee every couple of hours or so due to the huge pressure on her bladder. Sunday 15th Feb 2003 -- Theoretically only 3 days till Whelping Sandy's weight is now 44KG aprox 4KG of puppies and 3.5Kg extra body weight. Her normal weight is 36.5 KG |
As can be seen Sandy is rather large now as she is carrying 11 puppies and a significant amount of milk. From our calculations she is due to whelp in 3 days. We are taking her temperature each morning and night looking for the tell-tale drop in temperature that will indicate she is 24 hours from whelping. Yesterday she started to express some milk for the first time. Today we purchased Baby bottles and teets and hot water bottles. We are as prepared as we can be but are still in somewhat of a panic. Sandy looks rather awkward at times but carries it with grace and dignity and is extremely contented and as happy as ever. We can now see little bumping movements on her tummy and side as the puppies move around inside. it looks like she is ready to come to the boil :) |
Sandy and Kimba's puppies are being born this morning! Right now! 2:45 AM Wednesday morning 18th Feb 2004.
This update is live! Hey only a true computer geek would try to assist puppy whelping, provide panic, make a cuppa tea and update HTML pages at the same time!
Number 1 - A boy 444 grams. Full length Ridge... looks great - born 2:45 AM 18/2/2004
Hard to get it to find and latch on to a teet... finally got it to latch on and draw its 'First Milk'
Sandy seems a little confused... not positioning herself to give access to teets but we are managing (Learned a week later that this is due to cramps and a chemical should be given to correct this and help the dog settle down to puppy feeding)
Number 2 - A girl 402 grams. Good ridge slightly shorter ridge than number 1 - born 3:18 AM 18/2/2004
No problems with this little girl getting on a teet.. she is hungry
Number 3 - A boy 415 grams. Good ridge slightly shorter ridge than number 1 - born 3:29 AM 18/2/2004
Sandy now has the hang of it and knows exactly what to do and is anxious when we remove a puppy to weigh it... she is being protective and loving towards them.
Number 4 - A boy 373 grams. Full length ridge. - born 3:49 AM 18/2/2004
Its now 4:28 and no puppy no 5 yet so we are worried.. its been 39 min's so far
At last here comes another...
Number 5 - A girl 428 grams. good ridge length ok. - born 4:38 AM 18/2/2004
Number 6 - A boy 451 grams. good ridge Slightly shorter ridge than number 1. - born 5:00 AM 18/2/2004
Strangest thing... Danny is inside but unlike usual is staying right away... he seems to know that he is not to interfere or hassle us at this time. His behavior is just like dogs in the wild that patiently wait outside the den while the bitch whelps and tends the puppies.
Number 7 - A boy 392 grams. - born 5:18 AM 18/2/2004
Number 8 - A boy 408 grams. Unknown time and order of birth
Its now 6:09 and no puppy no 9 yet so we are worried.. its been 51 min's so far
Number 9 - A boy 496 grams. - Still born - 6:12 AM 18/2/2004
After almost an hour...
Number 10 - A boy 435 grams - born 7:10 AM 18/2/2004
Added a picture (4) below.
Number 11 - A Girl born 7:28 - Still born - Revived. Not looking hopeful - 8:35 AM Looking better... Screaming and squeaking now. Not suckling successfully yet. Suckled bit but just screeching and not finding teets. Hand fed with Biolac. Looking promising.
So final result 3 girls and 7 boys. One still born boy. All have ridges. Will examine ridges for length and offset in a day or so.
Planning to visit VET soon with sandy to get injection to help make sure she cleans out correctly. Waiting for VET to phone. Left message on Emergency Number at 8:28 and still no call at 9:20.. I am not impressed and that is the breeders VET Zammit! from TV's Burkes Backyard. They promised me if anything went wrong thy would respond quickly.. they have let Sandy and us down big time. Originally i was going to have a couple of VET's lined up in case the one I called did not respond. However when we became confident in Zammit we failed to line up other backstops!
9:30AM
Phoned the VET and they said not to bring sandy for the injection but to come over and pick up a needle to give her at home myself. Its an Hour to the vet and an hour back and in my current state I do not like the thought of driving that long... however im off to get it.
The attendant at the vet insisted that they tried to contact me for an hour after I phoned the emergency pager number. I kept the phone clear for the whole time but there was no call. I asked what number they were ringing so i could determine if the pager company got it wrong... but they were unable to tell me what number they were phoning. Lesson learned is do not trust VET after hour services... Arrange several on tap in case the first you try do not respond.
Coming soon: Individual photographs of each puppy.
Spent the day attending the puppies and feeding them on and off.. Sandy cannot feed 10 puppies on her own. However her milk supply is holding up with us supplementing it with additional feeds of Biolac.
10:00PM Friend from over the road came over to take a peek... Sandy did not take kindly to this and barked at them even though she is usually very friendly with them. Sandy seemed to remain unsettled so they discreetly left.
Day 2 19th Feb 2004
Sandy and the puppies seem to be all OK. Sandy is a little confused about how to lay down with them but she is coping. We have to attend her at the moment most of the time to help her keep them together. She tends to panic when one or two crawl away from her or when they start screaming. Will take her a while to realize that the noise is OK. We are providing her with as much positive reassurance as possible.
Had no real sleep for two days now. Had to work for a client today... traveling from Blaxland to St Leonards (2 hours each way) was a difficult thing.
11:15 PM Cooking Risotto for our dinner... finally some time for myself... hoping to get a few hours sleep tonight. Sandy seems a little less panicked tonight.
Day 3 20th Feb 2004
Sandy finally sleeping and Eating again.

Note: Girls should on average be lighter than boys. As you can see by week 5 the variations have evened out and the girls on average are 7% lighter than the boys. The correct body weights usually is established several weeks after moving to solid food with some swapping around between which is lighter and which is heavier at first as different puppies take to solids at slightly different rates. .This is as it should be. Overall we are delighted and this litter seems very consistent indeed. |

Day 22 Puppies First Solid Meal

At 3.5 weeks old puppies are now playing and walking around. It ia becoming apparent that they will need more space than the Whelping box alone can provide.
We decided to use some of the aluminium panels we have and the old artificial turf that we found at a garage sale to build a pen. We had purchased a temporary carport at Super cheap Auto this is 3M x 6M so provides an ideal shelter for the puppies from the sun and any unexpected shower.
We anticipate introducing the puppies next wednesday (4 weeks old) to the new pen for short visits initially. by 5 weeks they will be spending most of the day in this pen weather permitting.
Here are three pictures from various angles of the new pen. The pictures also show the deck over Johns workshop. THis deck had been planned for over a year but the desire for a nice flat and hygienic place for the new puppies spurred us on to finally put in a concerted effort and complete it in time for the litter.

Puppies feeding 4 weeks old

As you can see they are now way too big to be feeding on Mother.... doesn't stop them from trying though.
Puppy Toilet Training has started.
Ridgebacks are relatively clean compared to many breeds
Not they now Wee and Poo automatically at the Paper end of the whelping box. They no longer soil there bedding end. To continue this training the new owner should progressively move the paper further from their bedding and eventually at the back door. Eventually putting it outside the door. Soon the puppy will let you know he wants to get out to the paper if the door is closed.
